There are more than 8 islands scattered off the coast of Scotland, but just a few dozen play host to distilleries – though there is rumour of a whisky renaissance on Scotland’s fair isles.; Orkey, Skye, Mull and Arran were the perfect locations for illicit distilling operations in years gone by, and now they’re the perfect showcase of Scotland’s incredible diversity when it comes to whisky.; Each island marches to the beat of its own drum, not wavering to trends in whisky production or distilling – which means there are some truly unique blends coming from Scotland’s isles. The Isle of Skye is home to Talisker, a famous whisky that uses peated malt and pungent drams for an unforgettable fusion of flavours. There’s Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, which is characterised by a soft, almost menthol-like sweetness. Over in Orkey, there’s a salty tang to please the palate, while Arran, a relatively newcomer, is turning out barley-sweetened whisky that has a full-bodied and fruity taste.
