Fondly known to many as ‘Queen of the Hebrides’ Islay has gleaned a reputation for its vibrant, diverse array of distilleries. The picturesque isle currently boasts eight different distilleries, all producing totally unique whiskies.; From Islay arise rich amber fluids, the likes of which can’t be found anywhere else – not even in mainland Scotland. It’s rumoured that the art of distillation was first introduced to the island by Irish monks – but if the Irish laid the foundations for crafting whisky, it was the Scots who breathed life into the process and transformed it into the full-flavoured and complex spirits that we know today. Renowned for their smoky characteristics and distinct flavours, these single malts are celebrated and beloved across the world.
